Choosing a garden and landscape architect in Rotterdam

Outdoor space should suit the property, its users and the existing plot. A garden and landscape architect can design private gardens and business outdoor areas, considering everyday use, planting, overall layout and water management.

Start with the site and its users

Explain who will use the space and whether it needs to accommodate relaxation, play, visitors or staff breaks. Gather a plan, photographs and information about existing trees, level changes, sunlight, shade and places where water collects. Discuss what should remain, how much maintenance is realistic and how the garden connects with doors, paths and indoor rooms.

Separate design from delivery and maintenance

Ask which drawings, material selections, planting proposals and water management decisions are included. A landscape architect may coordinate contractors, paving specialists and gardeners, checking implementation against the design. Specify whether that supervision is part of the commission. Design does not automatically include installation or ongoing maintenance. The protected Dutch title is tuin- en landschapsarchitect; verify registration when someone uses it.

Check before deciding

  • Compare experience with similar plots and intended uses.
  • Agree on deliverables, responsibilities and review meetings.
  • Document installation, handover and maintenance arrangements separately.
